St. Dominic was born about 1170. He founded the Dominican Order
in 1216, known also as the Order of Preachers. Through the centuries,
so many branches sprung from this one tree, that it is now known
as the Dominican Family. Each branch has its own particular type
of work in serving the Church and all peoples throughout the
world. While the Order was founded to preach the Word of God
worldwide, its many forms continue this primary work through
its various charisms. The men and women members of the Order
preach, teach and above all pray to make known the Gospel of
Jesus Christ and proclaim His Truth. The Feast Day of St. Dominic
is celebrated on August 8.
